Wow! I can't believe how well Brent and Brooke are doing in track this year. APS hosted a track invite today that pretty much had all the best from 5A in attendance: La Cueva, Rio Rancho, Alamogordo, Clovis, Eldorado, Highland, Academy, Los Alamos, et. al.
We had the usuals sleep over last night: Daniel Gooris, Mycah Huitron, Brandon Simpson, and Hayden Schaap. They all spend the night and we fix them our famous French toast before their meet. Coach G (Norbert Gabaldon) and Terrance Motley showed up for the French toast too :-)
Brent and Hayden Schaap had decided they wanted to fly to Utah for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Priesthood meeting and figured their track meet would be over at 1 or 2 PM as every track meet so far has ended. Well, this meet had prelims and finals and something like 22 teams in attendance. Needless to say, we ended up leaving at 2 PM so the boys (with Greg) could make their 3:20 PM flight.
The meet started off scary for Cibola. Brent waited for the baton in the 4x100 relay in the 3rd leg...Eddie Eubanks started off the leg and was looking great and somehow in the handoff between he and Tyler Jaramillo, they dropped the baton. Brent was devastated as he was so pumped for that race and was hoping to improve their overall time. Then, almost immediately after the 4x100, Daniel Gooris barely made it into the finals for the 110 hurdles which he usually excels in.
The guys finally shook off the bad luck and began winning events (We were guessing the French toast finally kicked in...LOL).
Brent and his teammate Matt Valenzuela KILLED in the open 400m race! Brent PRed (personal record) with a time 49.75 seconds! He had to leave before the finals where his buddy Matt ran what probably was his PR of 48.75! Brent was sad because he was guessing he could have improved on his time running with Matt at that fast pace of a race but he was on that plane to Utah. Brent's time today has moved him from 3rd to 2nd place (right behind Matt) in the state which is really cool.
Brent was supposed to run in the 4x200 relay but it didn't take place til way after 2 PM. Cibola entered some other sprinters and came in 3rd I think (we would have came in 1st with Brent but it didn't end up mattering).
Hayden Schaap PRed in the javelin with a 166' throw. He's about three feet from qualifying for state.
Mycah Huitron and Brandon Simpson competed in their first meet of the season due to basketball just ending a few weeks ago. They both qualified in their jumping events. Mycah actually WON today shocking us with a 6' 5" high jump. Simp came in 2nd with 6' 3"...Some nice points for the team! Simp qualified for state in the triple jump and is currently 4th in the state with a jump of 44' 0.5" Mycah also jumped 21' 8.75" in the long jump putting him 3rd in the state. Gooris surprised us all with a 22'4" long jump which I think is a PR for him and puts him 1st in state.
Gooris also KILLED in the pole vault. He jumped 16'6". He's first in the state by almost three feet!
Corey Royball also PRed in the shot put today with a 51' throw! He is first in the state!
So...Cibola ended up winning the meet by about 30 points without any of Brent's points. Had he competed in his events, he could have helped us get probably 19 additional points. CRAZY!
I am so proud of the coaches and kids. They have been working so hard. I see us winning state for the first time ever if these boys stay healthy and keep their grades up!
Go Cougs!
